Cost and Performance Information
Cost and performance reports were prepared for
natural attenuation of petroleum
hydrocarbons and chlorinated
solvents. These reports are summarized in PowerPoint presentations for
both petroleum
hydrocarbons and chlorinated
solvents. The salient points discussed in both documents include the following:
- Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) of chlorinated aliphatic
hydrocarbons was recommended as the primary treatment alternative for at least
a portion of the CAH plume at every site evaluated in the AFCEE Technology Transfer field
investigations. However, it was recommended as the sole remedial alternative
at only 2 of the 14 sites studied.
- Natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons was occurring
to some extent at each of the 42 sites studied by AFCEE Technology Transfer.
- Engineered alternatives, such as source reduction, should
be evaluated to determine their impact on CAH plume migration and acceleration
of clean-up.
- The average present value cost to implement MNA as the
sole alternative at CAH contaminated sites was $480,000 per site. When an
engineered alternative at the source area was added the present value cost
increased to $876,000.
- The average cost of LTM for MNA remediation was $192,000
over the 30 year period estimated for clean-up. The addition of engineered
source treatment increased the average cost to $816,000 while reducing the
time to clean-up to 15 years.
