Restoration Performance Risk Management - RPRM |
Environmental site cleanup frequently takes longer than expected and often fails to achieve the stated cleanup goal resulting in increased cost and delayed restoration. Restoration Performance Risk Management presents an approach to examine the site remediation process in a holistic manner with a focus on managing remediation project risk.
Anyone conducting site remediation, whether it is publicly or privately funded, is obligated to manage project risk. Managing risk includes: identifying risk, tracking potentially significant risks, and addressing (or handling) the risks as they develop. Risk management is continuous. Activities begin early in the remediation process, and are repeated often so that risks can be managed at the most appropriate time during the site remediation lifecycle. Prudent project management includes a written plan for risk management.
Risk management is not new. Project risk management is a standard feature of project planning from the construction industry and is critical to planning space missions. As with many project management tools adoption of risk management into the remediation process has been slow and inconsistent. AFCEE recommends that all remediation efforts include project risk management as a best practice. We are in the process of developing the Restoration Performance Risk Management Guidance document. This document will provide the environmental profession with tools to execute the remediation risk management plan. The document will be posted as soon as it is available.
