| RPO - Major Program Goals |
The AF RPO Program has five major goals:
- Ensure cleanup actions achieve protection of human health and the environment, and are working towards accomplishing the cleanup objectives, goals, and levels outlined in a decision document (e.g., record of decision (ROD), statement of basis, permit, etc.);
- Continually reevaluate site cleanup strategies and processes, considering applicable changes in legal requirements, site environmental factors, and technological options;
- Track and report cleanup progress: examining the effectiveness of cleanup systems in relation to cleanup objectives, standards, and levels;
- Monitor and attempt to reduce a site's cost-to-complete, considering the total lifecycle cost rather than initial cost when selecting the cleanup method. Optimize in-place cleanup systems and LTM to minimize O&M costs; and
- Accelerate site transfer or closure, achieving site cleanup levels more rapidly and efficiently.
The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has established goals and objectives for the DERP in the Defense Planning Guidance (DPG). The RPO Program goals are a complement to the DPG goal of reducing risk to human health and the environment through implementation of effective, legally compliant, and cost-effective response actions, as well as a successful RPO program will ensure that the Air Force will achieve its goal of 100% Remedy in Place (RIP) or Response Complete (RC) for all relative-risk sites by FY12.
