History of the Regional Environmental Coordinators
- DoD established the DoD Regional Environmental Coordinators (RECs) on July 11, 1994
- The military services were tasked to serve as DoD RECs for the ten EPA Regions
- Army is the DoD REC for EPA Regions IV, V, VII, and VIII
- Navy is the DoD REC for EPA Regions I, III, and IX
- Air Force is the DoD REC for EPA Regions II, VI, and X
- Persons who serve as the DoD RECs are appointed by the service secretaries for their assigned EPA Regions
- Each service also designates component RECs for each of the ten EPA Regions (DoD RECs may also serve as component RECs for other EPA Regions)
Responsibilities
- Maintain direct communication with environmental regulatory agencies and the services
- Work with the RECs to identify issues that need to be elevated to DoD
- Facilitate exchange of information among the services on a regional basis
- Promote consistency among the services in addressing new regional and state environmental regulations/initiatives
- Partner with the services and regulators to improve compliance
